At the request of our high school and college student leaders, we are creating space to process the entrenched, deadly racism in our country, and what the Reform movement and individual Jews can do to leverage our power to make change.

“We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.” — Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have A Dream” speech in Washington, D.C., August 28, 1963

Martin Luther King Jr. was a social rights activist and a leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He was also an ally for the Jews. He repeatedly spoke out against antisemitism and voiced that “Israel’s right to exist as a state is incontestable.” As a community that has and continues to face oppression, it is our duty to be an ally to the black community during this time and at all times.
The innocent lives of George Floyd (46), Breonna Taylor (28), Ahmaud Arbery (25), Sean Reed (21), Tony McDade (38), and so many more were taken. Their stories must not go unheard. The black community is hurting. The world is hurting. This injustice and systematic racism cannot continue. We as a community must do better.
We are taught the Jewish value Tikkun Olam, meaning, to repair the world. Our world is in desperate need of repair right now. We cannot sit idly by as this injustice continues to occur. As Jews, it is our responsibility to TAKE ACTION and USE OUR VOICES.
